Biography

After finishing his studies in biomedical engineering in 1988, with a thesis on the subject of Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT), he started his career at the Laboratory for Agricultural Buildings Research, Faculty of Agricultural Engineering, K.U.Leuven, Leuven, Belgium, were he conducted research on the application of advanced information systems in livestock welfare monitoring. In 1990, he moved to the Vrije Universiteit Brussel – VUB, Brussels, Belgium, Faculty of Engineering, Department of Electronics and Informatics – ETRO, were he again took up his research on EIT, with emphasis on numerical aspects. In the mean time he finalized his degree in artificial intelligence, with a thesis on the application of artificial neural networks for the solution of the inverse problem underlying EIT. After a brief return to the Laboratory for Agricultural Buildings Research, K.U.Leuven in 1992–1993, were he conducted an explorative study on the application of artificial neural networks for genotypical classification of piglets based on phenotypical characteristics, he continued his research at the Department of Electronics and Informatics – ETRO. In the mean time, his research interests shifted to the application of numerical analysis for the solution of nonlinear ill-posed problems in general. Research domains now include, besides the original application of EIT, regularization strategies for the solution of discrete ill-posed problems, stabilization aspects of multilevel problem formulations, least-squares problems such as arising in the context of ill-conditioned problems, and the numerical aspects of interpolation problems in a variety of applications. Today, Bart Truyen is coordinating the activities involving Mathematical Problems in Imaging within the IRIS group of the Department of Electronics and Informatics, Vrije Universiteit Brussel – VUB.
