System Duality and the Included Middle

Host Publication: Proceedings of the 58th Annual Meeting of the International Society for the Systems Sciences

Authors: R. Cottam, W. Ranson and R. Vounckx

Publication Year: 2014

Abstract:

System practice invariably involves characteristics which lie in between extremes. System theory must be consistent with philosophy, which is traditionally formulated with an excluded middle. We address this apparent incompatibility in the manner of Stéphane Lupasco and Joseph Brenner, where the declared binary nature of entities or processes presupposes an included middle. We identify this binary nature with the duality of individual and environment. What we wish to do is to bring all investigative endeavors under a generalized umbrella of entity and ecosystem, and to a subservience of semantics to context. We hope that this workshop will provide much-needed theoretical support for system practice in all areas.
