Image Processing Optimization in the Development of a Laser Psychographic Microscope

Subject

In our laboratory, we are working on a novel lensless microscope that employs coherent diffractive imaging (CDI) to create 3D profiles of samples. Unlike traditional microscopes that use an objective lens to transmit images to the detector, our approach utilizes Fourier transform-based optical reconstruction imaging techniques. The CCD camera on the sample scanning system collects multiple diffraction patterns illuminated by a coherent laser, and a complex amplitude image with phase information can be reconstructed from the data without the need for a lens. One of the major advantages of ptychography over conventional microscopy is its ability to retrieve the object's phase state, which provides details about the optical path difference to the sample's surface for a given refractive index in the sample material, resulting in surface topography.

Kind of work

We are offering a master thesis project that involves the following tasks, with detailed guidance provided by a supervisor:

1. Developing a Python-based GPU algorithm to replace the current CPU-based MATLAB algorithm for faster calculation.
2. Demonstrating the effectiveness of the modified algorithm by reconstructing images and presenting the results.
